Coral Harbour is the gateway to the incredible wildlife resources of Southampton Island.Coral Harbour, known as Salliq (''large, flat island in front of the mainland'') by the Inuit, was named for the fossilized coral found at nearby Fossil Creek.From the earliest Inuit hunters of the Sallirmiut, to the Scottish whalers, to the Hudsons Bay fur traders, to the military air base, it has long served as a strategic point on the northern rim of Hudson Bay.Coral Harbour is one of the best places in Nunavut to see marine wildlife. Here, people are able to enjoy the traditional as well as modern livelihoods. Snow geese, print, duffle, whalebone, sandhill cranes and other species migrate to the area in the spring.Coral Harbour is to many artisans who work their wonder in ivory, tundra swans, soapstone and seal skin. The East Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary and the Harry Gibbons Bird Sanctuary are a must for bird watchers. The nearby Coats Island is a resting place for walruses.
